“Sam” and “Lenora,” a couple in their late 40s with a 9-year-old child, had lived in the same home for about three years with support from USDA Rural Housing. When the housing complex didn’t comply with notice requirements for recertification of income, the couple received multiple notices stating different amounts they had to pay as rent.

Soon, they were facing eviction and the prospect of losing their USDA Rural Housing. Clay County Legal Aid accepted the case and obtained forgiveness of past late fees and charges. The legal aid attorney also was able to recertify the couple’s rent at a lower monthly amount while Lenora looks for a job.
