“George” became permanently disabled after an injury, and his sole source of income is Social Security Disability. He didn’t know what to do when his bank account was frozen and he received a notice that his Social Security would be garnished, so he contacted JALA’s Clay County branch office. JALA helped George file a claim of exemption and request a hearing to challenge to the garnishment. When the creditor learned that the funds frozen were from Social Security, and therefore protected from garnishment, the creditor quickly dismissed the garnishment, freeing up the funds George relies on to care for himself and his child.
