“Anna” rents a mobile home with her 8-year-old daughter, who is diagnosed with multiple disorders that cause seizures, including epilepsy and cerebral palsy. Due to her serious medical conditions, it’s vital that Anna’s daughter avoid overheating, which can cause or exacerbate her seizures.
Anna and her daughter had essentially been without air conditioning since the beginning of May and their home was often hot. The air conditioning unit and its maintenance are the responsibility of the mobile home park owner and management. Anna regularly complained to management about the lack of air conditioning, explaining that it could do terrible and irreparable harm to her daughter.
After the management failed to properly fix the air conditioning, Anna was referred to JALA through the Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership. A lawyer in JALA’s Fair Housing Unit took the case and made a formal emergency request that management fix or replace the air conditioning unit.
Within about a week, management determined it could not fix the unit and replaced the air conditioning unit with a new one. Anna’s daughter is no longer constantly at risk of having seizures due to overheating.
