“George,” a longshoreman, is required to have a Transportation Workers Identification Credential to work. He needed to renew the credential in December 2018 but had been issued a preliminary determination of ineligibility.

Four years earlier, a JALA attorney in the Clay County Legal Aid office had helped him get a waiver and go through an appeal process so that his credential could be reissued. George reached out to the JALA attorney who had previously assisted him. It was important that the matter be resolved quickly, as George was out of work during the process.

The JALA attorney contacted the Transportation Safety Administration and was able to get George back to work quickly by requesting that a waiver again be issued, as the preliminary determination of ineligibility was based on the prior filing of an appeal.
