“Asmaan” came to the United States from Afghanistan after ISIS fighters attacked her village, killed several of her family members, beat her over the head with a gun, sexually assaulted her, and left her for dead. After seven years in the U.S., she was about to lose her SSI benefits. She had applied various times and been denied due to an insufficient medical exception for English and civics for the naturalization exam. JALA’s Immigration Unit helped her draft the application for the exception and obtained the doctor’s signature after literally chasing the doctor to the airport as she was about to travel out of the country. As a result, Asmaan was successfully naturalized. Now she can enjoy the benefits of U.S. citizenship.
