Facing foreclosure on their home, “Evan and Shayla Marks” came to JALA a few weeks prior to the pending sale date.
Shayla had developed health problems that caused her to have to give up her job, and she was in the process of applying for Social Security disability. Meanwhile, she and Evan had fallen behind on their mortgage payments and had been trying to enter into a loan modification with their lender. But they were repeatedly told that their papers hadn’t been received. The court directed them to JALA for help.
JALA in turn referred the couple to the St. John’s Housing Partnership (SJHP) for assistance with mortgage modification eligibility, and the SJHP found them to be good candidates. JALA then filed a motion requesting a continuance of the sale date, which was granted. The lender’s attorneys subsequently filed their own motion to cancel the scheduled sale because of the pending mortgage modification.
As a result of the collaborative assistance provided by JALA and the SJHP, Evan and Shayla have been able to keep their home and continue to contribute to the stability of their neighborhood.
