When “April” signed a lease for a new apartment, she believed she and her son “Josh” were going to be in a unit far away from the playground of the complex. This was important because loud noises are disturbing to Josh, who has autism.

But upon moving in, April realized the playground was right outside their back door. Noise from the playground was causing Josh sensory overload, to the point where he would lock himself in the bathroom in search of quiet. April asked the management to be moved several times but was told that any open units were reserved for new residents.

She and Josh came to JALA’s Fair Housing Unit for assistance. The Fair Housing Unit requested, as a reasonable accommodation, that April and Josh be transferred to a new unit away from the playground. The request was granted, enabling April and Josh to remain stably housed in a different part of the complex.
