The Bower Lyman Center referred “Alex” to the NFMLP after his Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits were cut due to an improvement in his medical condition. Alex is a medically complex toddler with a dysplastic malformed kidney and developmental delay.
The Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership (NFMLP) filed a request for reconsideration within 10 days of the cessation notice so that his benefits would continue pending outcome of an appeal. The NFMLP attorney argued that Alex continued to meet the child disability listing and that his SSI benefits should therefore continue.
The Social Security Administration ultimately found that Alex did in fact have a disability and was entitled to benefits. Because of the swift action by the NFMLP, Alex did not have a lapse in his benefits while his family endured the long wait for a hearing with the Social Security Administration.
