This includes: defending evictions/foreclosures and debt lawsuits; filing bankruptcies as needed; handling paternity and family law cases; assisting with public benefits and disability problems; removing driver’s license and housing barriers; resolving consumer problems, probates; and providing representation at unemployment compensation hearings.

St. Johns County Legal Aid also works with local nonprofit organizations in the community that provide housing, food, medical/dental care, and other services participants may need.

“The treatment court judges say that legal aid was the missing link and the secret sauce that now makes the team whole, with a holistic approach, so that full treatment needs are now covered,” Wall said. “St. Johns County Legal Aid applauds the efforts of these courts because they literally save lives, and do so for half the cost of traditional incarceration approaches.”

About Jacksonville Area Legal Aid
Jacksonville Area Legal Aid is a nonprofit law firm focused on delivering economic, social, and housing justice to low-income and at-risk individuals and families on the First Coast.

If you are an attorney wanting to volunteer with probate and heirs property issues, contact JALA Pro Bono Director Aaron Irving, at (904) 356-8371, Ext. 363, or Aaron.Irving@jaxlegalaid.org.

###

The post St. Johns County Legal Aid recognized for its service to the county’s Drug Court appeared first on Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, Inc..

JALA helps family obtain accommodation for toddler’s medically necessary equipment

Dennis Harrison

Children's Health

Client Stories

Fair Housing

slider

“Darla” was referred to Jacksonville Area Legal Aid through its Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership in early 2023. She has already lost precious time according to her treating professional.

She is “at a point where she is curious and motivated to move, and I would love to capitalize on this time to push her skills and developmental as much as possible so she can truly enjoy and experience life the way it was meant to be,” her doctor said.

Suzanne Garrow of JALA’s Fair Housing Unit requested a reasonable accommodation in writing and pointed out that the denial of the medically supported request was unlawful and a violation of the housing authority’s own policies. She cited the child’s treating medical providers in support that a further delay or denial of this request may prove so detrimental to her and that it may lead to further and more substantial impairment. As a result of JALA’s assistance, Darla’s family was immediately granted an emergency transfer.

###

The post JALA helps family obtain accommodation for toddler’s medically necessary equipment appeared first on Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, Inc..

Freed to Run is set to begin November 14

Dennis Harrison

Children's Health

Endowment

Freed To Run

Freed to Run is set to begin Nov. 14 in Tallahassee and finish in Jacksonville Nov. 19, when it is expected to have reached its goal to endow Jacksonville Area Legal Aid’s Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership (NFMLP) in perpetuity with $2.25 million raised over six years. Freed to Run will provide buses to transport runners from the Duval County Courthouse to the start at the Baker County Courthouse in Macclenny, and to pick up and drop off relay participants along the route.

The NFMLP provides civil legal aid to pediatric patients and their families to help the children overcome barriers to their wellness, including landlord-tenant, health coverage, family law, and other issues.

Gunster shareholder Asghar Syed, captain of Too Big to Fail, said he thinks Big Law is going to crush it.

“As we all know, ‘Size matters,’” Syed said. “And we’re out to prove it yet again. But in the end, this is all for the kids, so whether we win or lose, the kids win.”

Robert Travieso of The Travieso Law Firm, captain of Too Small to Fall, agreed.

“We are having a lot of fun with the rivalry, but only to draw attention to this very important issue,” Travieso said. “Children who are already dealing with health issues shouldn’t have to worry about things like being denied insurance coverage or substandard housing conditions that are making their health matters worse. By permanently funding the NFMLP, we are ensuring they’ll have a lawyer in their corner.”

Jennifer Grippa of Miles Mediation and Arbitration, co-captain of Neutrals Never Quit along with Penny Schmidt of Jax Mediation Center, said she’s happy to be part of a truly “healthy” competition.

“Of course, I never take sides, so it’s nice that all of our teams are in total agreement here,” Grippa said. “We all have the same goal in our sights, which is to put the NFMLP endowment over the top.”

All donations go to endow the NFMLP and are matched at 125% by Baptist Health up to $1.25 million. With the match, the six-year fundraising total is expected to reach the goal of $2.25 million to fully fund the endowment by the end of the year.

To register with or support one of the teams, visit:

Too Big to Fail | www.jaxlegalaid.org/toobig

Too Small to Fall | www.jaxlegalaid.org/toosmall

Neutrals Never Quit | www.jaxlegalaid.org/neutral

For more information, contact:

Too Big to Fail | Asghar Syed: asyed@gunster.com

Too Small to Fall | Robert Travieso: robert@traviesolawfirm.com

Neutrals Never Quit | Jennifer Grippa: jgrippa@milesmediation.com

About Jacksonville Area Legal Aid
Jacksonville Area Legal Aid is a nonprofit law firm focused on delivering economic, social, and housing justice to low-income and at-risk individuals and families on the First Coast.

About the Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership
The Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership is part of a nationwide network of projects in which professionals from the medical and legal communities collaborate to help low-income and vulnerable patients thrive. All donations are matched at 125% by Baptist Health Jacksonville, up to a total of $1.25 million, so if other sponsors and donors can come up with $155,000, Baptist would contribute the remaining $193,750, enabling Freed to Run to reach the endowment goal.

Four community leaders representing the business, legal and healthcare sectors are helping Freed generate support as event co-chairs. They are charged with attracting sponsors, donors and marathon relay teams, who will in turn seek donations.

Freed to Run co-chair Alex Jenkins is a third-generation Jacksonville native and a shareholder of NestEggs Retirement Planning Services. He is as passionate about running as he is about serving his community, and he regards Freed as a mentor and friend.

“As a young father, the mission of Freed to Run and the tangible impact it has on area children touched me deeply,” Jenkins said. “NestEggs has supported the event for a few years now, and I am looking very forward to having a more hands-on role in 2022.”

Co-chairs Dan Bean and Mike Abel of Abel Bean Law are also long-time Freed to Run supporters.

“Abel Bean Law has been a proud supporter and active running participant of the Freed to Run since ABL’s creation in 2018,” they said. “We believe in the mission of Jacksonville Area Legal Aid and are proud to support it.”

Oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Stephanie Reeder of Reeder & Cherry Oral Surgery joined the effort this year as co-chair in order to raise awareness in the healthcare community. She has been practicing professionally in Jacksonville since 2012 and is the Chief of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Baptist Medical Center.

“Freed to Run will enable JALA to provide generations of pediatric patients and their families with the legal assistance they need by permanently endowing the Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership. As both a physician and dentist, I am proud to support this one-of-a-kind event, and I invite both the medical and dental communities to join me.”

To donate, or to learn more about corporate sponsorships or forming a team, visit: https://secure.qgiv.com/event/ftr6/

About Jacksonville Area Legal Aid
The mission of Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, Inc. is to obtain and provide high-quality legal assistance to
low-income and other special-need groups and to stimulate and empower groups of poor people to
accomplish energetic and affirmative advocacy, all to alleviate the circumstances, incidence and causes
of poverty.

About the Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership
The Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership is part of a nationwide network of projects in which professionals from the medical and legal communities combine resources to produce outcomes for low-income and vulnerable patients (children and adults) that positively impact their health and ability to thrive.
