JALA helps veteran get discharge upgrade that restores his benefits and his pride

At 17,“James Gadbury,” not his real name, enlisted in the Marines, drawn by the desire to challenge himself and step out of his comfort zone.  During his three years of service, he was stationed at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia, a stressful environment where understaffing left him little time for rest, and where a toxic command culture brushed aside his mental and physical health concerns. After an incident involving other Marines occurred in his presence, Gadbury took responsibility for not intervening, which resulted in him serving time in the brig and receiving a demotion in rank. Although it was the only blemish on an otherwise stellar record of service, his plea agreement unexpectedly culminated in an “other-than-honorable” discharge, leaving him devastated and grappling with guilt and grief over his lost military career.  Unfortunately, such instances are not uncommon, and the consequences can be life-altering.

Aylmar Thompson: Serving His Fellow Veterans With Distinction

Like his father and grandfather before him, both of whom served in World War II, Aylmar Thompson dedicated years of his life to his country, serving from 2009 to 2017 as an operations specialist Second Class for the U.S. Navy. Now a paralegal in Jacksonville Area Legal Aid’s Veterans Legal Services Unit, Thompson has used his service-related insights to help the veteran-rich community of Northeast Florida since 2020. “I have an understanding of what the veterans who come into our office are dealing with, along with the culture they experienced, which allows us as a unit to really connect with the veterans and provide them with the best service we can offer,” Thompson said. Thompson decided to pursue legal studies following his military career after “observing service members around me being given bad advice, some legal, some general. I knew there was a better way. While pursuing this new field, a desire to do more lit inside me like a fire.”

JALA’s Latest Rising Star Annie Rodriguez Protects Consumers and Saves Homes

Jacksonville Area Legal Aid attorney Annie Rodriguez served in the U.S. Navy, where she learned Arabic and worked as a cryptologist translator, and went on to manage a manufacturing company before deciding that law school would be a great way to challenge herself. “A year into law school, I realized that I could really make a positive impact in individual people’s lives,” Rodriguez said. Within a few years of coming to JALA, that impact was recognized on a national level when Rodriguez received the 2023 Rising Star Award from the National Consumer Law Center. Rodriguez was humbled and encouraged by the validation for what she calls, “just doing my job.” “It has really just helped me to continue this work with enthusiasm and passion for the results that we can get,” said Rodriguez, who started out at JALA advocating for survivors of domestic violence before moving into consumer protection.

Veterans Legal Services Unit helps reservist navigate her divorce

Julie Barrett called Jacksonville Area Legal Aid for help with her divorce after hearing that it had a program that offered veterans free civil legal services. A former active duty servicemember, she had made the choice to stay home with her two pre-school-aged children and enter the Reserves so that her husband could continue his active-duty military career. “I followed him through several duty stations,” said Barrett, not her real name. “And my doing that for his career put me behind in mine.” Then, the marriage unraveled, and she found herself starting over. “My main priority was the children, ensuring my kids were still maintained. And thinking about the visitation,” said Barrett, adding that it was complicated by her ex-husband’s impending deployment. After what she called a “speedy turnaround,” Jacalyn Crecelius of JALA’s Veterans Legal Services Unit took Barrett’s case, aided by paralegal Aylmar Thompson.
